An annual report that reads as though everything went well is not an annual report.

Why nothing downloads yet
Our reports exist as internal documents and have not yet been produced to a standard we are willing to publish, including being made accessible to screen readers. Ask and we will send what we have in the meantime.
What each report will contain
- Programme delivery against what we said we would do, including shortfalls.
- Monitoring results, with the control site alongside the restored sites.
- Seedling survival by site, not just an average.
- Financial summary: income by source, expenditure by category.
- What did not work, and what we changed as a result.
- What we intend to do next year, specifically enough to be judged against.
The reporting year
- July
Financial year opens
Budgets are set against the plan the board approved, and the previous year's figures are closed for reporting.
- Sept-Nov
First planting window
Delivery figures for the short rains. Everything planted is counted on the day, site by site.
- January
Six-month returns
Sites planted in the short rains are revisited and survivors counted. The first honest test of the year's work.
- Mar-May
Second planting window
The long rains, and in most years the larger of the two windows.
- June
Twelve-month returns
The count every survival figure on this site rests on. Field count first, then reconciliation against the planting records.
- Aug-Oct
Report and accounts
Programme report drafted and accounts prepared, both to the board, then filed with the NGO Bureau and published here.
How the numbers in a report are arrived at
Planting figures are counts made on the day, at the site, before anyone leaves. They are not inferred from seedlings dispatched, because seedlings dispatched and seedlings in the ground are different numbers and the gap between them is never zero.
Survival figures come from returning to the same stretch and counting living plants, at six months and again at twelve. Twelve months is the figure we publish, because a seedling alive at six months has not yet been through a dry season.
Where a site fails, it stays in the denominator. Quietly dropping failed sites is the easiest way to make restoration work look better than it is, and not doing it is why our twelve-month average is 61% rather than something more comfortable.
Expenditure is reported by category against the audited accounts once an audit applies. Until then the split we publish is indicative, and it is labelled as indicative everywhere it appears.
About these reports
Why is there no 2022-23 report to request?
Because in that year there was no monitoring protocol worth reporting against. We planted at Biharwe and we did not go back systematically enough to say what survived. That is a real gap, and stating it is better than filling it retrospectively.
Are the accounts audited?
Not yet. External audit applies once the organisation reaches the threshold, and the first audited accounts will be published in full. Until then the figures are internally prepared, and every page carrying them says so.
Can I have the underlying data rather than the report?
Yes. The planting and survival records and the water quality readings are available as CSV on request, under a licence that permits reuse including commercially.
